CLEVELAND – Number four overall pick in the NBA Draft Dion Waiters and 17th pick Tyler Zeller, took the stage with Cavs head coach Byron Scott and general manager Chris Grant on Friday.
Both draft picks, dressed in suits and ties, took questions from the assembled media after a brief introductory remarks by Grant.
When asked about playing with current Cavaliers guard, and 2011-2012 NBA rookie of the year, Kyrie Irving, Waiters said he looked forward to teaming with last year’s top NBA pick. Waiters, out of Syracuse, said he felt they will each complement each other’s skills.
For his part, Zeller, the center from North Carolina, said he looked forward to learning from retired Cavs big man Zydranus Ilgauskas, who now works with the Cavs on player development.
Zeller also commented that it was “weird,” pretending to be the draft pick of the Dallas Mavericks after being notified of the trade made by the Cavaliers to acquire him. Zeller said he even did two interviews posing as the Mavericks pick, before the trade was officially announced.
It was also announced that both players will be attending a dedication ceremony at an east side Cleveland Clinic children’s health care facility at 3 p.m.
