Oprah is really trying to get those ratings up and shift the demographics of OWN viewers.
For the next round of “Oprah’s Next Chapter,” the journalist plans to delve deep into the life of singer Rihanna.
Lately, O’s been hitting some homeruns for the network, with recent interviews with 50 Cent and Kim Kardashian. Yes, it was a risky one, but it actually turned out to be a success.
Oprah got all the juicy details about Kim’s 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries, the depression that followed, and her famous sex tapes that made her famous.
“Would you be where you are had there not been a sex tape?” Oprah asked Kim. “You know, I think that’s how I was definitely introduced to the world,” Kim replied. “It was a negative way, so I felt like I really had to work 10 times harder to get people to see the real me.”
Many have speculated why Oprah, one who has interviewed some of the classiest and most powerful individuals in the world would want to spend hours talking to one of the most controversial families that have not seemingly contributed to society in a positive way.
“I genuinely wanted to know why they have become a cultural phenomenon? Why do so many people love to watch their every move and why do so many others love to hate them,” Oprah wrote. “Are they completely ego centered? Are they really ‘famous for being famous’ or is there something more?”
Now that she’s bringing Rihanna on, it’s a wonder if it’s about the rating or something bigger.
The singer first appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and performed “Redemption Song” to benefit victims of the Haitian earthquake. Oprah dedicated the whole show to domestic violence.
Since then, Rihanna has reconciled with Chris Brown, causing a bit of a stir.
“It’s the television business. So when people say, “Are you trying to get ratings?” everybody who’s on television is trying to get ratings. For 25 years I tried not to think about ratings. I just did what I did because I had a contract that gave me the freedom of not [to] worry about ratings. But this is a business.” Source
