CLEVELAND – It’s a Thanksgiving Day tradition that’s been going on for three decades.

Instead of simply kicking back to watch parades and football, thousands of people got in on the action themselves.

A record crowd of 7,400 runners and walkers turned out for the 30th annual Hermes Road Racing Turkey Trot.

The five mile run stepped off on St.Clair Avenue in downtown Cleveland this morning.

Plenty of the participants sported festive turkey and pilgrim costumes.

So what motivates these runners to wake up early and run on Thanksgiving Day?

“I just like the spirit of the holiday and I want to be able to eat more later,” said Brad Behnke. “Kind of like him, so we can eat more later,” said Catherine Cook.

The race benefits the St. Malachi House. This year’s canned food collection was likely record setting as well.
